Controversy surrounds the claims some make for the royal ancestry of Rev. John Cotton, which are largely based on the work of Horatio Gates Somerby, who made his living documenting wealthy 19th century Americans "English Roots" for a fee. Mr. Somerby has subsequently been found to have all too often taken creative license to fill in gaps when research and documentation failed him. Still, these claims based on his work often appear on internet websites like Rootsweb as it seems that it is desireable to ground families in Royalty.
As previously stated on the COTTON ANCESTRY page where the "Traditional Cotton Line" is shown, no conclusive proof for Rev. John Cotton's ancestral line has been found earlier than his father's records.
